I have done a lot of reading about opponents to this 'Designer Dog' craze and cross breeding in general. I know there are valid points on both sides and I am just curious about everyone else's point of view. Why should we or why should we not be creating mixed breed dogs?

my vet said that becasue I have a dog that is mixed with a pure breed shih-tzu and pure breed poodle, he will have less health problems then his parents. When you mix the 2 pure breeds you get a healthier dog. Time will tell.I don't know the studies on this but I am sure it has to do with the DNA mixes. Which somehow make a healthier dog or a dog with less of the health risks as its parents?

For us it was the answer to a question we had been searching for an answer for for years. We needed a dog that was capable of working hard and yet had a strong desire to be a part of the family. We needed a dog that could be loyal and protective yet still capable of herding the horses and goats with minimal guidence. So, in a desperate attempt we bred my lab with my brother's acd in hope of producing pups with the best of each parent and bingo. We had a litter of four pups; I took one, my brother kept one and the other two were given to cousins. Thus far they have made the best farm/family dogs we've ever had. We breed only once every two years or when there are enough names on the waiting list to provide descent homes for all the pups. We give them away. We're not in it for the money. It's my opinion that when you can't find EXACTLY what you're looking for.. you make it. The key is to be responsible about it and accept what you get. Do your research. Be responsible and don't let greed take over.

For me, I have owned dogs before, but never the smaller ones. I always wanted a chi and when I finally a male, I already had two chipoos that I had fallen in love with. They didn't shed, they were very loyal, protective and just had awesome dispositions. The male bred both of my females and one I lost in a terrible accident. The other produced the most beautiful, healthy foursome of puppies I have ever seen. And I've seen alot of them. The are a bit more expensive, however vets all around this country will tell you that in particular chi's and toy poodles, tend to be healthier (which means alot to me seeing as most chi's have sugar issues), the cross does not shed, not in my case anyway, and they are just beautifully put together, body, mind and soul. Beautiful dogs, there is just a lack of knowledge about breeding them. It takes alot of money to say the least, the ability to want to take that risk, along with the ethical and moral standards breeding brings. But all in all, I love them.

i think that it is good that we are making mixed breeds because we can get two very good traits from two seprate kinds of dogs and combine them into one. i have a mixed breed a pappion and a poodle mix and hes verry smart and cute. i personally would like to breed him with a toy poodle, a papion or pappi poo.

I think that a mix brings all the great qualities of however many breeds together in a the best way, 99% of the time. It is the rare "bad" litter that gives the rest a bad name. I would love to breed my Fugly if I could find a female dog(chinese crested) that embodies all of the great charicteristics he has that I love. So as long as people are breeding their dogs for all the right reasons and not thinking they will get rich more power to them.

Years ago, 'designer dogs" were mutts, mixed breeds, etc. Now that so many people are finding them perfect pets the purebreed community wants to ostersize us. For me the only purebreed dog I will own are German Shepherds, my choice. I have two and have always had them. As for my little dogs, I will only have Chipoo's and Malchi's, again my choice. For those that choose only to have the purebreed only, that is their choice and I don't put them down for that so I wish they would quit trying to make me feel bad for wanting my little Chi mixes. I have been to several websites that I was told to leave because they ddn't want to advertise my "designer mixed breed" dogs. I was very insulted and I don't mind telling you I let them know how I felt.[:(!]
My little guys are perfect to me. My Chipoo is totally devoted to me and the sweetest little girl (ok, except when she is bossy her Uncle Roody around that is) and I could not have imagined the last 10 years without my Malchi Roody, who if I do say so myself, is probably the smartest, sweetest, most gentle soul on earth.
Ok, that's my two cents worth. [:D]

I've only had 2 dogs my entire life. Both were rescues and both were amazing dogs. I had a pure bred black lab for 9 years. She was a very loyal and loving dog. I currently have a Chipoo that is 9 months old and he is also a very loyal and loving dog.
Before getting Mulder, my Chipoo, I knew nothing about "designer dogs." Once I got him at the shelter I did my research to find out about Chipoos and found out a lot about "designer dogs." First of all I hate that term. My belief is that as long as the dogs are bred with the best interest of the animal at heart then I don't have a problem with the mix breeding. It's the same with the pure bred dogs. I don't care as long as the animals are first and the breeding is second.
I will only own rescues and I honestly don't care what breed as long as they have a wonderful personality and fit in with my family. After owning a lab and a chipoo and can honestly say those two breeds would be at the top of my list as they are wonderfully sweet dogs.
Some people are just snobs and don't care to learn about anything new. They are scared of change and are all about tradition. If you look most "pure" breeds are a result of cross breeding at some point in time.

I totally agree with you manateelover. I too new nothing about 'Designer Dogs' or even what that meant before getting my little Lacey. We wanted a little dog and happened to find her at a flea market of all places. The lady put her in my arms and she looked up and me and fell asleep just like a baby. I had to get her. After we had her a few weeks we decided she needed a friend and looked all over for another Chipoo. The only place I could find one was in Missouri. So we bought Logan and had him flown to us. (I would not recommend this to anyone reading. Logan is a very scared, stressed little dog which I believe may be from his tramatic experience as a pup).
This site was started because of these two dogs who have totally changed my life. I couldn't find any information about this mix or a place that would openly accept them so I started one. We then adopted a German Shepherd Mix last year. He is a wonderful dog. I am a lover of dogs above all else and do not care what mix or term is used to describe them as long as they are loved and cared for and not bred only for money.

I think you will find that "muts" is another term for mongrels rather than designer dogs/crossbreeds. For those of you who don't know the history of Doodles, they were originally bred in Australia as guide dogs for blind people allergic to doghair and the original ASD's(Australian Service Dogs) have many different breeds in so are technically mongrels. The English Doodles are mainly Standard Poodle/Labrador or Retriever and are now being used as Guide Dogs, hearing Dogs and Assistance Dogs ie: Canine Partners because although some unscrupulous breeders advertise them as "non shedding" which isn't always the case, frequently they don't shed and DO have fabulous natures ideal for the cause. Obviously, there are now so many poodle crosses and mixed breeds...all wonderful pets and well loved by us. They tend to be healthier and better nature so long live the n#mix breed!

I have always adopted dogs, all my dogs have been mix breed dogs that I have adopted at one place or another. They have always been the best dogs i have ever had but I never really thought about particular breeds till the past few years. My husband got a job were he works 12 hour shifts and is gone for most of eather they day or night being that its swing shifts, and after strangers drove up into our yard at 3 in the morning one night and scared me we decided we needed a guard dog. I had issues with this.. most of the breeds he suggested was great guard dogs.. but not good family dogs and i have two little girls. Goliath we stumbled across one day at a market were breeders gather to sell there dogs...he was so sweet and lol lazy we had to take him home. The breeder said he would make a good guard dog and family dog. Latter i researched the American Bull dog and Mastiff mix and found out that the two were breed together to make a guard dog that was family friendly. Truely Goliath is just that, being great with the kids and very alert and protective. If my children scream he makes it to them before I do it is a great mix and I actoly want another of the same mix.

It was really interesting reading all the opinions about designer mixes. I have a dog that meets all the reason why we got her.Whether she is or designer mix really does not matter. I guess if I was a breeder and selling dogs it would matter. My dog welcomes any other dog to play, she loves people, she competes in agility for me. She loves doing the agility it is my need to complete. I think comparing and purebred vs designer mix is all in our human heads. My dog has value to me and contributes to our family life and what other people think or say really does not matter to me and especially does not to my dog.

you cant really say your dog wont have health problems since most of them are passed from genetics. if one of the parents have health issues then it is possible the offspring will have it as well. which is why reputable breeders do health testing before they breed which mean the dog has to be 2 years of age to have ALL the testing done. MOST people breed dogs together to get the look of one breed but the personality of another. trying to get that "perfect" dog. some mixes i have no idea why they mix because the breeds are so similar in look and in personality. like i dont understand the point of mixing a malamute with a huskey...they are pretty much the same dog just one is a lot larger. with my dog i chose a pinneranian because i am a huge fan of the miniature pinscher, doberman pinscher, and german pinscher (she is a min pin pom mix) but i loved the coat colors of the pomeranian, and was hoping they would get more pom personality than the min pin because min pins can be a bit crazy. and she turned out to be the PERFECT dog for me. there is a purpose to some of these mixes but sadly most of them are created just to tack on a few hundred more dollars from backyard breeders who dont breed the PROPER way

corky95621 nicely put. My dog's cross and my interest in this cross was because I have always wanted a white coated dog that was medium in size but a working dogs so we could compete agility. I got exactly what I wanted.

I think that mixed breed dogs, in general, are much healthier than purebred dogs. Every mixed breed dog that I have owned, or that my friends and family members have owned, seem to have much healthier and longer lives than purebred dogs. From my experience, mixed breed dogs seem calmer and more well behaved than purebred dogs.

you can just look at a dog and guess that it is healthy. many things dont pop up unless you have had exams and medical testing done on the dogs which most purebred breeders do. every breed has a different life span amount. larger breeds live shorter lives than smaller breeds. it all depends on how you take care of your dog and what you feed your dog. you cant judge health by your dog and your friends dogs compared to the who knows how many million mixed breeds there are out there. im not trying to be mean im just trying to get you to look at the bigger picture here. lets say you have your mixed breed and i was to get one from the same litter you did. lets say you feed your dog a grocery brand dog food and i was to feed mine raw. your dog would most likely develope tons of health problems cuz it is not getting adiquate nutrition. EVERY dog is different NO MATTER WHAT even from the same litter! purebred or not there is no scientific evidence that mutts are healthier than purebreds. people see certain purebreds as high strung because they dont understand the breed or they didnt buy the breed for what is was bred to do. now on the other hand Back Yard Breeders tend to have the most unhealthy dogs cuz they do not do the proper health testing and dont care who they breed their dog to as long as they get money from the puppies. show breeders dont make money on their dogs because they put more money into the breeding and for the proper care of the puppies. they get all the puppies their shots and health tested BEFORE they go to their new homes where as backyard breeders just slap on a price tag and off they go. i have NEVER had problems with my purebreeds.

Interesting post about health mixed breeds vs purebreds and some excellent points. All I know is I want my dog to be as healthy as I can possibly make her be. I also think if you notice something going wrong or is off with your dog always check it out with your Vet. The vet who you go to regularly and knows your dog.Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
