How can I find out what breed my dog is?
He was a rescue and I have no history on him. By popular opinion he might be a Lhasa-Poo. I'd like to know for sure and I've heard of some test that might be available... Anyone have info on this? I'm looking for specifics: what tests are available & where, how reliable are they and what's the cost.
Thanks! :)

Welcome! I don't know much about the specifics but our vet said she got her Golden Retriever's pups tested after she was found with the neighbors dog to see if they were purebred or not and it cost about $1000 for 8 pups. Check out the profile for lucylatte (//www.designermixes.org/Members/Profile.aspx?Member=109) she had her dog genetically tested. Maybe she could give you some advice. FYI - you can always post his pictures under 'Unknown Mix' for other's to see. It wouldn't be official but they may have some ideas as well.
Good Luck with your venture and let us know what you find out!

I'm not a huge fan of those doggie DNA test kits they have out there. A lady posted a video on youtube cuz she wanted to see if those tests actually worked and were acurate. She had an American Staffordshire Terrier that was AKC and had many blue ribbons from being shown. Her tests came back that the dog was a border collie mix......was a pretty interesting video. but who knows maybe there are some out there that do the job correctly. but to be honest most of them just want the money and send you back whatever results. they would have to have lots of DNA from many breeds to be able to tests your dogs DNA against it. they have to have something to go off of. honestly i think they are a bunch of crap

I read the posts and it sure was interesting. I have never thought about having DNA done on my dog because I have all her history back 4 generations. Also when I compare pictures with other dog owners of the exact same mix and similar history they all look very similar. What reason or maybe purposes would you do DNA? It dose not change your dog and it sure is a great way to take some of your cash. I am only asking why it would be important to do.

i think some people want to get the testing done to better understand their dog. Once you know what is in the mix you can research the behaviors of the dogs that are involved in your breed. That would be my only reasoning. i know their are people out there that do it just for shits and giggles to see what their dog might be and laugh when they see the results cuz it doesnt seem like their dog at all. Like I said before, they dont work.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I am very happy that my breeders was able to give me all the papers and background about my girls history, so I knew exactly what dogs to check out. I also got to meet some of the dogs in her history. Her dam and sire were both Cock-A-Mos and she looks exactly like them. Her Great Dam and Great Sire are Cock-A-Mos and she also looks exactly like them. Too bad it is not very accurate because if you got a rescue dog and had no knowledge of its background it could have given you some insight.
