We just adopted Ozzy, a 3 month old Eng-a-Poo (1/2 English Toy Spaniel and 1/2 Toy Poodle). He has a "mild" case of luxating patella. His knees do not go out of joint but he has "weak knees." So far he doesn't seem to have any issues with this, but the vet said we won't know the full extent until he is about a year old.
I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this. I have already changed the dog food to one that contains glucosamine and will probably start him on supplements when he's a little older. Does anyone have some advice for me?

read under name gingergirl, my baby had surgery on her right leg...after x-rays to find out what was wrong. She is doing good now, will always have a limp....She is a shih-poo.. Hope all goes well with your puppy.

Hello to you and Ozzy. My little Lacey also had an issue with a luxating patella when she was a little over a year old. She would be running around and just stop and hold up her leg and then in a little while she was fine again. We weren't sure what it was a first but one day I picked her up and rubbed her leg a little when it happened and I actually felt it pop back into place. We took her to the vet and she said it was a bad case of luxating patella in her left leg and a very mild case in the right leg. We made an appt with a specialist and they did surgery on her left leg. You can read more information in my blog and see Lacey's after surger pictures as well.
Knock on wood...She will be 4 in May and is doing just fine we have never seen her limp since and the right leg is just fine and hopefully will never need surgery. I have all three of my dogs on Glycoflex I. I started them all on it when the youngest one was about 1 year of age.

Thanks for your replys. Ozzy's case is mild so we are hoping that it doesn't escalate to the point where he will need surgery. Right now, it's like there isn't anything wrong at all. He runs and plays with our other pup Lulu. He even tries to jump on the couch but he's too small to actually get up there. So should I wait till he's 6 months or a year before I start him on supplements? (He's only 3 months old and I know most supplements aren't age appropriate for him.)

Hi, We just found out tonight during our Chipoo's annual exam that he
has luxating Patella. He will favor his right leg sometimes and
it feels like it pops in and out. The vet said we don't need to do
anything right now, but if we wait to long, it could make it harder
to fix as it deteriorates more.He's 18 mos. so we're not sure what
to do at this point.
I am going to ask my vet about switching to a food w/glucosamine like you mentioned.

Ohhhhh....poor little guy [:(]. Lacey was about 18 months old when she had her surgery for her luxating patella. She would limp occassionally and it kept getting worse for about a month or so. One time she limped when she was chasing Logan and I picked her up and rubbed her leg and it popped. She had a pretty bad case according to the surgeon. Knock on wood...I has been almost three years and she is good as new. She chases Logan (and Lance) around and has not had any problems since. I do give all the dogs a Glucosamine supplement (Glycoflex I) everyday. Best of luck with him!!
