Jake's Story & Details
I got Jake from a rescue operated in the North GA Mountains. After my husband's heart attack in 2003 we lost everything and had to move to an apt. We kept our seven cats and Maggie with us.I would see this rescue set up every other weekend at a nearby pet store. I would always stop and talk with the woman running it and pet as many of the dogs as I could. When I saw Jake in his pen I asked if I could get him out. It was okay so I did. As soon as I sat down on the sidewalk he crawled into my lap and made himself at home. I fell in love with him at that moment. The owner knew what we had been going through financially and I couldn't afford to pay the adoption fee but I could afford to feed him. As she had received him from a vet who had given him all his shots and neutered him the only thing she had to spend money on was his food for a week, so she gave him to me as a gift. She told me if he didn't work out with Maggie, our lab, I could bring him back with no problem. I was thrilled! We took him home where he and Maggie promptly took a liking to each other. We taught him that chasing our cats was not an acceptable game. The cats got used to him and often I would see him cleaning a cat or one of them cleaning his face and ears. He is the first dog I ever fell in love with. He passed away last December from a tumor on his spleen that had ruptured causing internal bleeding. My husband, Maggie and I were all heartbroken. I still am. I know I will never find another Jake but I am searching for another Bassador who is part Golden Lab Retriever. He was absolutely the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever known. I love the breed and would love to have another one. Perhaps it would also help Maggie to recover from his loss if she has another baby to mother. We moved to Iowa three years ago and had to give up all of our cats in doing so. We do have one cat now, Walker, who gets along well with Maggie. I love them both but I really want another Bassador. They are a great breed.
