Trixie's Story & Details
Trixie was a shelter girl originally from So.Carolina where she and her litter mates (some looked like Labs and some like BCs we were told) were found by a river. At eight months old, she was brought to Washington DC where we adopted her as soon as we met her. She is the sweetest puppy who adores everything that comes her way. Not knowing anything other than how she was found, we think she never had a real home. She was never trained or even brushed - her fur made her look like a small bear! She inhales her food as if she had to compete for it; she wasn't really house-trained when she arrived but had that down in about three days (amazing). She goes to her crate during the day when we have to leave her (no separation anxiety at all) but at night she knows she'll get a treat if she goes to bed, so she'll open the crate door herself and go in, turn and wait for the treat. She's very intelligent - she learned to bring in the newspaper after the very first day that I asked her to carry it, so every morning she goes out to get it, and then she'll pick up the paper and bring it into the house. She'll go left and right on our daily walks -"left" w/one whistle or "right" w/two whistles or just "straight" - two "clucks" mean "straight". She knows to sit and stay before we cross the street (that also took one training session). Her vocabulary is growing: "upstairs, downstairs, basement, kitchen, front (door), back (door), walk, food, treat, heel, slow, hup (stop), driveway, car, outside, Domino (the cat), bone," "Right or left at the corner" (from 20 yds away), among other words, but she still situationally ignores "leave it" and "no". She's not perfect - she stills tries to chew things at times (my eyeglasses) and training her to the invisible fence was impossible so we had to remove it. She'll still counter surf when not supervised; she chases our cat if he runs and stands over him if he doesn't, but he's no longer afraid of her; she has "patted" him on the head occasionally - very touching to see. Other than these little annoyances, she's just a wonderful Lab/Border Collie - looks mostly Labbie with a white blaze on her chest and white and tan on her back paws (only). If she'd only stop chasing Domino...... The best feeling for my wife and me is when Trixie stands by where one of us is sitting and gently lays the side of her head on the closest lap. Her beautiful almond-shaped eyes can melt the hardest of hearts.

Update: Trixie gained 10 lbs, of muscle in the last year and now she's twice the weight she was when she came to live with us. We thought she'd be a medium-sized dog but she's much bigger than we expected. There's just more to love.

Update II: Trixie just had her teeth cleaned and had to be anesthetized, so she had her dewclaws removed, finally! She wasn't a well cared-for pup before she arrived here but has never been anything but ultra sweet. When she gets her annual injections, immediately afterward she'll rest her paw on the vet's arm, as if to say, "That didn't hurt, and I'll show you what a good girl I am".
