Shylah's Story & Details
In December 2008 our Weimereiner passed. In January my better half, Jack, decided to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and we became the proud owners of a teacup yorkie named Stuart Li'l (Stuey). Never having owned a small dog it took me about 3 months to adjust to our 2.8 lb companion. Family kept asking when we were going to get Stuey a "friend". I believe small dogs really benefit from pet companions. My answer was I will know the dog I want when i see it. I joked that i wanted a "homeless, disney looking dog". We occasionally stopped by adoption fairs and browsed craigslist and kijiji. Then we walked in a pet store during an adoption fair and I noticed a dog with her back turned. Her apricot red hair mixed with white was tipped black. It reminded me of a rebellious teen color project. Then she turned and I took two steps back. "OMG, that is the ugliest dog I have ever seen!" -- "She could stop traffic." I was laughing so hard when I asked the gentleman what she was. A "lhaffon" he remarked. i had to hold her just to take a couple of pics. She was calm and friendly. I asked if we could bring our yorkie to play with her. "Of course", he replied. Other people were commenting under their breath about her "unique" appearance. We really didn't plan to bring her home as we left. But during the ride home I continued to laugh about how 'different" she appeared. What could we name her? On the 30 minute ride we threw out a couple of names-- Grace, Sasha, Hepburn (a favorite of mine for a female English bulldog), Bette (after Ms. Davis of course), and then I said Shyla (not even sure it was an actual name). We both thought that sounded nice. After being home I talked to my parents and joked that I had just met the "ugliest' dog I had ever seen. They wanted to know when we were going to get her. "Oh no-- we don't need another dog now. We might take Stuey back to play with her though.' I called the pet store that was hosting Shyla and asked if they still had "Ugly". The gentleman on the phone quickly replied, "The lhaffon? yeah she is here". We took Shyla in the playroom first and then introduced Stuey. She was calm but inquisitive. They played well, no aggression on either part, for about 40 minutes. She was already responding to her new name-- Shyla. We were still laughing as she rode home in my lap. Now I have to explain the variation in the spelling of her name from the story to the listing. On Monday I decided to google Shyla to see if it meant anything. The first six links were to an "adult film star". This will never work i thought. Then as I scrolled down I saw that adding an "h" made all the difference. Searching Shylah, with an h, immediately brings you to baby name definitions. Shylah means "loyal to god;strong" in the baby dictionary. At that point we asked everyone to add an H when referring to the our new family member.
