My Happy Dog

MY HAPPY DOG

The reason I am writing this story of my dog Happy is because I don’t want to ever forget how very much I loved him and I never want to forget the hundreds of things he did to make me happy every day.

In December of 2001 I was looking at pictures of all the dogs on web site Petfinder. I came across the picture of a dog who looked similar to one that had just passed awy just two months before.. His name was Mr. Muff and he was with us for over 18 years. Mr. Muff was a Schnauzer/Cocker/Poodle mix.

My wife Sandy came home and I showed her the picture. She immediately suggested we send an email asking for more pictures. I did and the next day two more pictures arrived. When I showed them to her I said, “What do you think?” She said I think we should go and get him. Happy was in the home of a lady named Lorraine Schrieber who was a member of the New Jersey Schnauzer Rescue Network.  She lived in Trenton, New Jersey an eight hour drive from our home in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

On Saturday we drove from St. Clairsville to Harrisburg, Pa. where my half brother Tod Jeffers lived.  We stayed at his house overnight and drove to Trenton the next day. That was Dec. 8, 2001.

When we arrived at the lady’s house and when she opened the door there were there were about eight dogs living there. They were all excited and looked like they all wanted to be adopted. All accept one who was sitting at the end of the couch in the living room. The one we had driven there to see. His name was Happy and he was a mix of Schnauzer and Cocker Spaniel. He was a black dog with white front paws and a white patch of hair on his chest. Sandy sat down next to him and petted him, but got no reaction from him. He seemed afraid and shy.

We signed the necessary paperwork for the adoption, paid the fee and started to leave with him when he bolted out the door and down the street.   I ran after him. He suddenly turned around and ran back up the street toward the car where Sandy had opened the door. He jumped in the car and got in the back seat.

my backyard by Freya

Sorry about Scruffy's nose but he shouldn't have been in my backyard without checking with me first...What do you expect me to do when I come out my doggie door and find a scraggly big animal starring at me  with that stupid cock eyed grin?  The nerve of him!  Sure seemed to upset daddy as he made me stop eating his nose.  Just trying to protect my territory!

Everyday I run out my door and bark with the sheer joy of living in the mountains.  Texas was hot and I enjoyed my walks but I would get so sweaty.  I loved to swim in the bayou but my mommy kept yelling about snakes and gators.  Here the water flows from a secret place called a cave and is clean (98% whatever that means)  and I jump in (not too clean after that I guess, I do pee in the stream sometimes) and drink the water while my little brother Ziggy gets up the courage to put a paw in (He is such a little scaredy cat...eeks! bad wording , he is cat intensive but don't know what he'd do if a cat stopped and waited for him.  He hides under the shed and the table when I chase him ..I love him but he has to accept his place! I did worry when we thought he was lost, but don't tell him!)

My parents  call me a DIVA, not sure what that is, but they especially call be that and smile when I take my own sweet time to come when they call and when I stretch out on my couch cradled by the pillows.  My favorite place is in my backyard as the sun goes down.  I am queen of my domain.
