Lilly's Story

by wendydelmo on 5/4/2009 at 5:46 PM in First Post

As a family, we used to rescue senior, special needs dogs. We are unable to continue fostering or providing hospice care for them, but our 10 year old daughter Ally wasn't ready to give up. She wanted to raise money to help animals, and was pondering how she could do so, when I threw out- "Why don't you write a book, and we'll publish it?" To be perfectly honest, I wasn't sure she would- I thought she'd be more apt to have a toy tag sale, a car wash, etc. but she surprised me. She sat down, wrote a synopsis, an outline, and then the book. Lilly's Story is written in the perspective of a dog, Lilly, who was born in a puppy mill, was sold, abandoned, lost, put in a shelter, then placed in a rescue, spayed, and then finally found her forever home. It's sweetly written and lovingly illustrated.

Once she showed us the almost finished product, I got started researching publishers. Boy, I was in for a shock! It was far costlier than I imagined it to be. I am in the process of finding the perfect printer for us, and finalizing the funding for printing. We do have an angel who is covering a portion of the cost.

This is not a plea for funding- you see, we've found a contest called Ideablob that offers $10,000 grants to people with a great idea- to help them realize it! We have written up our idea, and it's in the running this month to win $10,000! The person with the most votes wins. Ally's idea is 3rd in line to win this weeks' "sprint" (each week is a sprint, with the top 2 winners getting a spot in the final week's vote-off). What we ARE asking for is some publicity on your blog or site, if you can. I feel that if we empower kids to do the right thing that they can make a difference, and I want to do everything in my power to help my child make her difference. Her plan is to sell the book, and use the proceeds to help people and shelters in need, especially in these tough economic times.

I will gladly link your blog or site in our blog- and I am in the process of making her up a webpage, as well. Our blog is at: http://wendydelmo.typepad.com/lillys_story (there is a link to the ideablob contest in her blog, and I can send you a button, as well)

I really appreciate your consideration.

My sweet little girl

by sophiesmom on 5/3/2009 at 10:52 PM in First Post

From the minute I saw her I was in love. Here was this little 2 lb ball of fur, big ole Gremlin ears and I had never seen anything so cute. The minute she was put in my arms she kissed me and wouldn't let me put her down. She went to work with me everyday for the first two weeks so I could work on potty training. She is so funnyShe will be sound asleep beside me and if I move at all she will be awake immediatly to see what I am doing. She refuses to let me get too far away. She got her first "spanking" (that's what we call any discipline. I actually just slapped the floor next to her) and it broke her heart and mine. She watched the cat use the litter box and the next thing I knew, she was laying in the floor eating cat poo. OOOOHHHHH Gross. As soon as I got done cleaning it up and sat down she came up slowly and got on my lap. She tried to kiss me but that didn't happen. She sat and looked at me for a minute as if to say "please don't be mad" and I couldn't resist her. I cuddled her and told her that she couldn't do that anymore and she laid in my lap and went to sleep. I know she's spoiled rotten, but I don't care. Even the vet said she could tell that she was rotten and a big mama's baby. Other than a few little problems, like potty training and temper, she is so perfect. I knew I would love her but this blows me away at just how much she means to me.
