Volunteering

by sands904 on 5/26/2009 at 8:00 PM in Dog Rescue

I decided since I am only working 3 days a week right now I finally have the time to Volunteer at my local shelter. It is something that I have wanted to do for quite a while but with a full-time job, 3 dogs of my own and maintaining this site there was just not as much time as I would have liked. I volunteered at Safe Harbor Humane Society in Kenosha, WI which is where we adopted our third dog Lance last October.

I went in for the 1-hour orientation on Saturday and wen in today to walk and visit with some of the dogs. The first dog I walked was a Jack Russell mix. She looked like she may have has some Chihuahua also. She was a little shy and timid around the other barking dogs in the cage but very sweet when I opened the door. She loved the walk but wanted to be close to me the whole time.

The second was a male Min Pin who was also adorable but did not have the loving personality of the first. The third was a hound mix of some kind. She was a typical hound when we walked pulling the whole way with her nose in the lead.

It was a very good experience. It just breaks my heart that people can just drop dogs off there like they are old shoes...

PS: We have also added some new merchandise to our CafePress store to help with Dog Rescue...Check it out!

Update on Logan's Class

by sands904 on 5/19/2009 at 8:03 PM in Logan

Last night was the 5 week and Logan is showing a lot of improvement since the first week. He gets to come in early and socialize with the puppies at the end the class before his. He is starting to do better with that. Last night one of the other dogs keep wanting to follow him around and he wasn't sure how to react but he kept his cool for the most part and dealt with it nicely.

As they continued to play a couple of the other dogs got overly excited and Logan went over to see what was going on. Him and one of the other ones got is a barking match so I picked him up and the other dog wanted to continue to play and kept jumping at him. But Laura the instructor said he really did handle himself very well, so that is encouraging at least. Maybe in a couple of weeks he will get to go to his first ever play-group so that should prove interesting and fun.

I am having just as much fun at class as he is. I love learing about dogs and their behavior. It is something that has intrigued me since the first day I brought Lacey home. I don't know but I think I may have found my second calling as a Dog Trainer...
