Logan's Second Play Group

by sands904 on 10/1/2009 at 11:52 AM in Logan

So we took Logan to another play group last night....definitely nothing like the first. There were a lot more dogs at this one. We let him off leash at first like the trainer said to but that didn't last long. He kept running up to all the dogs and barking/lunging toward them. I got him back on leash an took him off to the corner of the yard and calm him down. I had to do this many times at first.

He eventually calmed down enough we could walk around the other dogs and he was fine for the most part until one of them came up to him. Depending on the dog he would bark/lunge toward them or be just fine. I worked with him for the entire hour making sure to let him know he was doing good everytime he looked at another dog without reacting. By the end he was a lot better. I am going to try this again at the next play group and maybe someday my sweet little boy will be sweet to other dogs :)

Logan's First Play Group

by sands904 on 9/28/2009 at 8:48 AM in Logan

Yesterday was another play group so we decided to take Logan with also. Up until then only Lacey had been going because Logan's behavior around other dogs had been a bit unpredictable. He is a very stressed little boy and somedays are better than others. Yesterday was a good day! After seeing that there were only a few dogs on the list to be there I decided it was Logan's turn to try one out. My husband and I packed them up and headed out. I figured it is outside in a yard in a nice neighborhood and if he didn't do well I could just take him for a walk.

We pulled up and he saw the other dog that was already there and started barking. My husband got Lacey out to take her in while I unhooked Logan's harness (ooooppppsss) and opened my door to get out. He was in the back driver's side seat and I was in the front passenger's seat. I was going to go sit in the back with him and try to calm him down a bit but as soon as I started to open my door he lept from the back out of the car and was up to the fence in about 3 seconds. I got him and put his leash on and went back to shut the car door. I let him meet the other dog through the fence and besides seeming very excited he did good. We went in. I left him on the leash for a few minutes to see how he would react. He was really pretty good (at least for him). Then another dog showed up and he of course went back to his barking ways. He got to say 'hi' and settled down a little. I let him off leash and hoped for the best :)

He ran up to the other dogs (there was only 2 besides Lacey) and sniffed them. Then he was fine. A couple of times he had to bark like crazy at one of the dogs but he ususally does that when he plays with Lacey so I think he was trying to get her to play. They ran a little but she wasn't real sure about his barking. The trainer thinks they will be friends next time and play some. HOPEFULLY!!!

Overall it was a great time to see him calm down around other dogs and actually show interest in playing with them. Not too many months ago I don't think he would have done that.
