Caring for a Mal-Shi

Feeding: As a puppy Mal-Shis should be fed 3 times a day. As they grow older they should be switched to two feedings per day.

Living with a Mal-Shi

Grooming: The Mal-Shi's coat should be groomed every 2-3 months. Mal-Shis should be bathed every 2-3 weeks as they can start to smell. They should be brushed every day to prevent knots in their fur.

Training: Mal-Shis are usually easy to train as they are very clever dogs. They can be very difficult to housetrain however so a lot of time needs to be spent teaching them. Puppy pads may be needed as some people struggle teaching Mal-Shis to go outside. Housetraining should be started as soon as possible and needs to be persistant until they have learned.

Barking: Mal-Shis are expected to bark a lot.

Exercise: The Mal-Shi are very lively dogs that require about 20-30 minutes of exercise a day. It is recommended that you only buy a Mal-Shi if you have the time to deal with their high energy level.

Living Conditions: Mal-Shis are suitable for families, the elderley and older children. They are not recommended for families with very young children or babies as they may bite or jump on the baby thinking that it wants to play.

Mal-Shi Appearance

Size: Mal-Shis are a toy dog and thus have a very small build. They weigh between 9 pounds - 22 pounds or 4kg - 10kg as an adult.

Companionship: Mal-Shis make great companions as they are very loyal to their owners and will protect their teritory.

Tail: Mal-Shis have a curly fluffy tail which curls upwards.

Color: The Mal-Shi tends to be a combination of colors. They get their white color from the Maltese and a variety of other colors including brown, black, grey, caramel from the Shih-Tzu. The coat of a Mal-Shi can change from puppyhood. If a Mal-Shi is white as a puppy they commonly have a brown coat in adulthood.

Coat: The coat of a Mal-Shi tends to be long, fluffy and silky.

Life Expectancy: Mal-Shis are expected to live for about 10-12 years.

Characteristics: Mal-Shis are very playful, sociable and boisterous dogs. If they are neglected and trained properly they can become very snappy dogs.

Mal-Shi Health

Health: Mal-Shis tend to be a healthy dog but are prone to eye diseases. It is important to keep their eyes cleen and washed out every couple of days. Mal-Shis are also expected to have problems with their teeth if not properly cared for. To avoid this, their teeth should be brushed frequently. Fiving them dental sticks or treets to chew on can also help.
